Android: Den Tunnel baut unsere kostenlose App Router VPN.
Keine Datenerhebung, keine Protokolle Ihres Verkehrs, kein Konto.
2. So funktioniert es
Windows – VPN eingebaut
Windows
A. VPN-Zugang in der FRITZ!Box anlegen (je Gerät)
Zu Hause im Browser http://fritz.box öffnen und anmelden.
Internet → Freigaben → Reiter „VPN (WireGuard)“.
„VPN-Verbindung hinzufügen“.
„Vereinfachte Einrichtung“ bzw.
B. Windows: VPN in Fritten&Fax einrichten
Viele FRITZ!Boxen nutzen 192.168.178.x.
GmbH (vormals AVM). FRITZ!Box, FRITZ!OS und MyFRITZ! sind Marken der FRITZ! GmbH. WireGuard ist eine eingetragene Marke von Jason A. Donenfeld.
Fritten&Fax · VPN
Fax on the go through your FRITZ!Box – the VPN explained
Why Fritten&Fax needs a VPN on the go, where the tunnel leads, which traffic uses it and why none of your data reaches us. For Windows (VPN built in) and Android (with our app Router VPN), with step-by-step FRITZ!Box setup and help with problems. Last updated: October 2026.
In short
The VPN connects your PC or phone only to your own FRITZ!Box. We run no VPN server; your faxes and your traffic never pass through us.
It is needed so that Fritten&Fax can fax through your FRITZ!Box on the go – with your own fax number, the box’s fax storage and call list.
Windows: from Fritten&Fax 3.7.0 the VPN is built in – no extra program. From 3.7.1, by default only traffic to your home network goes through it; the rest of the PC’s internet stays direct and fast.
Android: our free app Router VPN builds the tunnel. By default only our apps use it, and only for connections to your home network. Download on this page.
The tunnel is encrypted (WireGuard). Your FRITZ!Box creates the access data itself; it stays protected on your device.
No data collection, no logs of your traffic, no account.
The VPN only runs when you switch it on and can be disconnected at any time.
Fritten&Fax faxes through your FRITZ!Box: in the home network it talks to the box’s fax function, fetches faxes from the fax storage and reads the call list and phone book. At home on Wi-Fi or cable this works directly. On the go – on mobile data, in hotel Wi-Fi or at a customer’s – your FRITZ!Box is deliberately not reachable from the internet. Without a VPN, Fritten&Fax cannot fax through your box; waiting faxes stay queued until you are back home.
A VPN builds an encrypted tunnel from your PC or phone to your FRITZ!Box. To the box, the device then looks as if it were at home in the home network. The box does not need to open any fax or telephony services to the internet – that is safer than making them directly reachable.
2. How it works
Windows – VPN built in
Fritten&Fax takes the file your FRITZ!Box creates for the PC (wg_config.conf) and sets up the Windows service “FrittenFaxVPN” for it. Windows asks for administrator rights once. The tunnel is held by the signed VPN driver WireGuardNT (network adapter “FrittenFax”). After that you connect and disconnect with one click, without further prompts.
Android – with Router VPN
Our free app Router VPN builds the tunnel through Android’s VPN function. You scan the FRITZ!Box QR code and switch the VPN on with one switch. Fritten&Fax for Android (from 1.3) shows whether the VPN is running and sends waiting faxes as soon as it is on.
The tunnel ends at your FRITZ!Box. Its destination is set only by the settings your box created. We do not see your traffic, do not redirect it and cannot see it.
3. Which traffic goes through the tunnel
The FRITZ!Box file is set up to send all of the device’s traffic through the box (AllowedIPs including 0.0.0.0/0). That is safe but makes browsing slow: everything takes the detour via your connection at home, and its upload speed is the bottleneck. For Fritten&Fax, the way into the home network is enough.
Windows
In Fritten&Fax under Settings → “VPN to the FRITZ!Box (fax on the go)” → “What goes through the VPN?” (from version 3.7.1):
“Home network only (recommended)” – the default. Only connections to the FRITZ!Box and to devices at home go through the tunnel. The rest of the PC’s internet stays direct and fast. Names such as fritz.box are still resolved by the box.
“Everything through the FRITZ!Box” – all internet traffic of the PC goes through your connection at home, for example on open Wi-Fi. Websites then see the address of your home connection.
The choice applies immediately; if the VPN is connected, it briefly reconnects. Windows does not distinguish between programs here: the choice applies to the whole PC. With Fritten&Fax 3.7.0, everything still goes through the box – the VPN card says so explicitly.
Android
In Router VPN on the connection under “Settings”: by default “Only our apps” · “Home network only”. Then only Fritten&Fax, Softstringsphone and Softstringsphone Pro use the tunnel, and only for connections to devices at home; all other apps bypass the VPN as usual. You can also choose selected apps, all apps except exclusions or all apps, plus “Automatic by network” (for example: the VPN rests at home). The Router VPN page explains everything.
4. Privacy and security
No data collection: neither Fritten&Fax nor Router VPN has an account or its own VPN server; the VPN sends nothing to us or to third parties.
No logs: traffic in the tunnel is not analysed, modified, logged or redirected.
Your key stays protected (Windows): the FRITZ!Box file contains a private key. During setup, Fritten&Fax puts it in a folder that only Windows itself (SYSTEM) and administrators can read, and encrypts it there with Windows data protection (DPAPI). You can then delete the file in “Downloads”. Commands in the file (PreUp/PostUp) are never run by Fritten&Fax. Status and log of the VPN service contain no keys.
Only the installed program: setup only works with the installed Fritten&Fax (under “Program Files”), so no other program can swap the service that runs with system rights. Uninstalling removes the service, the stored file and the driver (if no other program uses it).
Android: Router VPN stores the settings encrypted (Android Keystore) only on the phone. Before the first start the app explains what the VPN does, and Android asks for your consent.
Can be switched off at any time: on Windows with “Disconnect” (dashboard or VPN card), on Android with the switch in Router VPN, the quick settings tile or in Android’s settings.
A FRITZ!Box with WireGuard (FRITZ!OS 7.50 or later).
A connection through which the box can be reached from the internet: with its own public IPv4 address or via IPv6 (see DS-Lite). Easiest via the box’s MyFRITZ! address.
Windows 10 or 11 with Fritten&Fax 3.7.0 or later, installed with the setup from this site (the choice “Home network only” is available from 3.7.1).
Android 8.0 or later with Fritten&Fax for Android 1.3 or later and Router VPN.
A separate VPN connection in the FRITZ!Box for each device – PC and phone separately.
6. Step-by-step setup
Best set it up at home: then one click is enough on the go. The FRITZ!Box interface is often in German; the German labels are given in brackets. Menu names can differ slightly depending on the FRITZ!OS version.
A. Create the VPN access in the FRITZ!Box (per device)
At home, open http://fritz.box in a browser and log in.
Choose “Simplified setup” / “Connect a single device” („Einzelgerät verbinden“), then “Next”.
Enter a name, e.g. Fax PC or Phone, then “Finish”.
The box asks for an extra confirmation: dial the key sequence shown on a phone connected to the box (e.g. the landline phone), then “OK”.
The page with the WireGuard settings of your FRITZ!Box appears with a QR code and a download button. For the PC: download – the file wg_config.conf ends up in “Downloads”. For the phone: leave the page open and scan the QR code with Router VPN.
Note: do not choose “VPN (IPSec)” or “Connect networks”. The box shows the settings only once; if you closed the page, delete the access in the box and create it again. The QR code and file are a key to your home network: do not share or photograph them, and delete the file after importing it.
B. Windows: set up the VPN in Fritten&Fax
Open Fritten&Fax: Settings → “VPN to the FRITZ!Box (fax on the go)”.
“Set up VPN …” and choose the file wg_config.conf. Windows asks for administrator rights once – confirm.
Under “What goes through the VPN?” keep “Home network only (recommended)” (from 3.7.1).
Delete the file wg_config.conf in “Downloads” – Fritten&Fax keeps the key protected.
Test: connect the PC to your phone’s hotspot, click “Connect” and then “Check box”. If it says “FRITZ!Box connected”, everything is ready. Then “Disconnect” and go back to your home network.
On the go: open Fritten&Fax and click “Connect VPN” on the dashboard – that is all. At home, “Disconnect” again.
No store needed: when you open it, Android asks once whether installs from this source (for example your browser) are allowed – allow it once. Updates are not automatic; new versions are available here. The app is available in English and German. Router VPN privacy policy.
Download Router VPN with the button above and install it.
Create a separate VPN connection for the phone in the FRITZ!Box (step A).
In Router VPN, “Add connection” → “Scan QR code” and point the camera at the box’s QR code.
Switch on the connection, confirm the explanation “Before the VPN starts” with “Continue” and allow Android’s request with “OK”.
Fritten&Fax for Android now shows that the VPN is running and sends waiting faxes.
Tips
At home in your home network you do not need a VPN: on Windows “Disconnect”, in Router VPN switch on “Automatic by network” – then the VPN rests at home by itself.
Each VPN connection of the box belongs to exactly one device. Do not use the same access in two programs at the same time, for example in Fritten&Fax and in “WireGuard for Windows”.
7. Common problems
“VPN connecting …” – the FRITZ!Box does not answer
Test with your phone’s hotspot, not in your own home network.
Check that the VPN connection still exists in the FRITZ!Box (Internet → Permit Access → VPN (WireGuard)). If you created it again, import the new file (“Use a different file …”) – the old keys no longer work.
Some public Wi-Fi networks (hotel, office, train) block the VPN. Then try your phone’s hotspot.
If the box gets a new internet address, e.g. after the daily reconnect, Fritten&Fax looks up the address again by itself.
“The internet address of the FRITZ!Box (MyFRITZ!) was not found”
Is the PC online? Then click “Connect” once more.
In the FRITZ!Box, check under Internet → MyFRITZ! Account that the box is registered. After a restart of the box it can take a few minutes until the MyFRITZ! address is correct again.
“This is not a VPN file of the FRITZ!Box” or “the settings file of the FRITZ!Box itself”
You need the file wg_config.conf from “VPN (WireGuard)” for a single device. Add a new VPN connection in the FRITZ!Box (“Connect a single device”; answer “No” to the question about an existing configuration) and use its file. If something is missing in the file (key, address of the PC, internet address of the box), Fritten&Fax says exactly what.
“Cancelled” – Windows asks for administrator rights
Setup needs the Windows confirmation once. If you work without an administrator account, an administrator approves the prompt once; after that you connect and disconnect yourself without prompts. The built-in VPN only works with the installed Fritten&Fax (setup from this site).
“The VPN driver could not be started”
Restart the PC. If that does not help, reinstall Fritten&Fax with the setup from this site; your data is kept.
Connection with DS-Lite (no own IPv4 address)
Many cable and some fibre connections have no own public IPv4 address. The box is then only reachable via IPv6. The VPN works if the network on the go also supports IPv6 – usually the case on German mobile networks, often not in other Wi-Fi networks. Remedy: ask your provider for a public IPv4 address or use your phone’s hotspot on the go.
Same address range as the other network
Many FRITZ!Boxes use 192.168.178.x. If you are on a Wi-Fi with the same range on the go (for example at friends with a FRITZ!Box), your home network cannot be reached. Remedy: use your phone’s hotspot or change the address range of your own box (Home Network → Network → Network Settings → IPv4 Settings) and then create the VPN connections again.
Browsing is slow while the VPN is connected
Then all traffic goes through your home connection, and its upload speed is the bottleneck. Remedy on Windows: Fritten&Fax 3.7.1 or later and choose “Home network only (recommended)”. On Android: in Router VPN 1.1 or later “Home network only” (section 3).
The VPN is connected, but faxes do not go out
In the VPN card, “Check box”: if it says “FRITZ!Box connected”, Fritten&Fax reaches the box.
If faxing works at home, it also works through the VPN – the box sees no difference. Under Settings, the box address should be fritz.box or its address in the home network (e.g. 192.168.178.1).
8. Alternatives
The built-in VPN and Router VPN are an offer, not a must:
Windows: the official program “WireGuard for Windows” – Fritten&Fax describes this way in the VPN card as a collapsed alternative. There, whatever the box file says applies (usually everything through the box).
Android: the MyFRITZ!App by the box manufacturer or the official app “WireGuard”.
Without a VPN: at home in your home network, Fritten&Fax faxes directly through the FRITZ!Box.
Use a separate VPN connection of the box for each program, or switch on only one at a time.

Android

Android
6. Configuración paso a paso
Internet → Habilitaciones (Internet → Freigaben) → pestaña «VPN (WireGuard)».
7. Problemas frecuentes
Muchas FRITZ!Box usan 192.168.178.x.
